In order to enrich employees’ spare time and to enhance their understanding and appreciation to Chinese traditional culture, Far East Global (refer as FEGG) held a Chinese Traditional Paper Cutting Workshop on April 16, 2018 in Hong Kong head office.

Paper cutting is one of Chinese traditional folk art which was originated from how women from the Tang Dynasty cut gold and silver foil into different shapes and decorated their faces. As it plays an important role in our traditional culture, the state council has already included it as the first group of National Intangible Culture Heritage and the UNESCO has also added it into the Human Intangible Culture Heritage Representative List.

This workshop invited the National First-Class Artist, Yunxia Li’s student to lecture. The instructor first introduced the history of Chinese paper cutting and all kinds of symbolic meanings with interacting games. Then, she taught a few tricks on holding the scissors, applying force and pushing the scissors to cut. After that, through demonstration of the five different paper cutting elements: circle, sharp, square, indentation and line, to let participants practice the basic techniques of paper cutting. Employees picked different subjects and began their first try. No matter butterflies or gold fish had all their personal hue.

We might have heard about Chinese traditional paper cutting, but have never get an opportunity to understand it’s cultural message. This workshop let participants understand the attractions of Chinese traditional folk art. As one of participants says, Chinese traditional paper cutting has now been recognized by more and more foreigners, but we as Chinese seldom recognize its beauty. We hope our employees get to know more of Chinese traditional artwork, because these are the finest gift given by time and we are responsible for its conservation and inheritance.
